Northern Territories

from Darwin to Katherine

Likely just like my 2016 trip, I'll start again in Darwin, a small town in the northwest of the Northern Territory. First, I'll spend a few days acclimatizing, then travel by 4WD through several National Parks to Katherine.

from Darwin to Katherine

After picking up the 4WD at RedSands, I'll first do some shopping and probably try camping overnight to make sure I have everything. I did that last time, and there always seems to be something missing. Although Katherine also offers the option of buying some last-minute items, it's a bit easier and cheaper to find them in Darwin. After that, I'll head to Katherine via Kakadu National Park and Lichfield National Park.
  • Darwin

The real beginning of my 4WD journey to Perth. Darwin is a quiet provincial town on Australia's northwest coast, and if there's one place that truly embodies the country's laid-back mentality, it's this one. It's between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius year-round with high humidity, so you immediately get a taste of the tropics.

  • Litchfield National Park

About an hour's drive from Darwin, Litchfield National Park is possibly one of the Northern Territories' best-kept secrets. It was my first time in Australia, but it was a short trip en route to the larger Kakadu National Park. I'm eager to see more of the park, and I can easily test the state of my camping gear and then quickly return to Darwin for any necessary supplies.

  • Kakadu National Park (Gunlom Plunge Pool)

At Waterfall Creek in Kakadu National Park lies the Gunlom Plunge Pool. Although I've been to Kakadu before, I don't recall seeing it, and judging by the stories and the website, it's definitely something I have to see.

  • Katherine

At the junction of Highway 1 where you either turn west towards Western Australia or continue south towards Alice Springs lies Katherine. It lies on the banks of the Katherine River, straddling the boundary where the tropics meet the outback. Here I have to decide whether to head straight to Western Australia via Timber Creek or continue south for a visit to Daly Waters with its historic pub.

In Katherine I can do some shopping again and from there I leave for Arnhem Land and the Southern Lost City in Limmen National Park.
