Arnhem Land

from Katherine to Arnhem Land

At the northern tip of Kakadu National Park, right next to it, lies Arnhem Land. This vast area is (once again) owned and governed by the original inhabitants of this land.

from Katherine to Arnhem Land

After shopping in Katherine, if all goes well, I'll be on my way to Nhunlunbuy, a small town in the northeastern corner of Arnhem Land that I discovered through Trip in a Van, the website of an Australian family who has been traveling around Australia for over three years and are creating an ongoing report. Many of the places I want to visit this time are featured in videos they regularly post. Nhulunbuy in Arnhem Land is one of them, and I can hardly wait.
After Arnhem Land I have to go almost all the way back to Katherine because there is no shortcut to Limmen National Park where I want to go next. The advantage of this is that on the way there I pass the Daly Waters Pub come, a legendary pub in the town of the same name where only 23 people live.
  • Arnhem Land

Arnhemland is an area of 97,000 km² in the northwest of Australia's Northern Territory. The area was named by Matthew Flinders, who named it after the Dutch ship Arnhem, which explored the coast in 1623. The ship, in turn, was named after the Dutch city of Arnhem. The area has been an Aboriginal reserve since 1931. This reserve is home to the Yolgnu, one of Australia's largest indigenous tribes. The area is now administered on behalf of the Aboriginal people by the Northern Land Council.

  • Limmen National Park

I want to visit Limmen National Park mainly for the Southern and Western Lost City. These enormous sand sculptures formed part of the seabed millions of years ago and were gradually formed by water and wind as the sea level dropped.

  • Daly Waters Pub

On the Stuart Highway, between Tennant Creek and Katherine, lies the town of Daly Waters, home to just 23 people. Here, you'll find one of Australia's most unusual bars: the Daly Waters Pub. This legendary pub is an absolute must-see when driving the Stuart Highway. Dating back to 1893, it's one of the oldest buildings in the Northern Territory. Since then, traders, farmers, and travelers have come here to unwind after hours of travel through the Outback, leaving behind a personal touch. As a result, the entire bar is crammed with the most remarkable souvenirs, from banknotes and license plates to musical instruments and stuffed animals, to shoes and bras! The Netherlands is also represented with orange scarves, clogs, flags, and even public transport passes.

Back from Limmen National Park, I want to take the Buchanan Highway via Top Springs and the Victoria River to Timber Creek. From Timber Creek, I can simply take the Victoria Highway back to Kununurra in WA and then on to the Gibb River Road.
